The Pays Cathar

The Domaine de Fraisse is an ideal base to discover the magnificent Pays Cathar in Languedoc-Roussillon.

This incredible region is a living testimony to the 12-13th century crusade against the Cathars and is abundant with ancient châteaux, abbeys and medieval villages, all with a dark tale to tell.

It also boasts the most incredible natural sites, contrasting landscapes, fine wines and of course the impressive Canal du Midi, making it ideal for hikers, sightseers, cultural and activity tourists alike.

Just minutes from the region’s heart - the imposing 12-14th century citadel at Carcassonne, the hotel is also bordering the luscious hills of the Corbières and the famous Abbey de Saint Hilaire where the famous Blanquette de Limoux – the world’s first sparkling wine was created.

The Corbières can be easily reached on four or two wheels. Cyclists can delight in riding peacefully along its deserted country lanes, through fertile woodland and alongside winding rivers, under the gaze of ancient chateaux clinging to the hilltops. Main sights include the picturesque Lagrasse – one of the most beautiful villages in France, the Cistercian Abbey of Frontfroide and the Cathar châteaux of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse.

South of the Domaine, the area around the Aude Valley is equally flooded in history - right back to the prehistoric era. The spa towns of Allet-les-Bains and Rennes-les-Bains, the ancient town of Limoux and the impressive Rennes-le-Chateau (mentioned within Dan Brown’s “Da Vinci Code”) are some of the most interesting stop overs. Children and adults will love the Dinosaur museum in Esperaza, exhibiting some of the valley’s excavation finds. This area is also a popular watersports location with many canoeing courses and white water rafting rapids around Axat, Quillan and Alet.

The peaceful Canal du Midi and the sleepy towns of the Minervois are just a short drive (or ride) away. The historic roman settlement Narbonne and the Mediterranean coast can also be reached within 40 minutes with plenty of beach resorts to choose from (Gruissan, Narbonne Plage, Saint-Pierre, Sète, etc).
